Alcohol: Dependence vs. Addiction
Alcohol addiction & dependence are often used interchangeably, but refer to different aspects of an unhealthy relationship with alcohol. Alcohol Dependence primarily refers to a physical reliance on alcohol. Someone who is dependent has adapted to regular alcohol consumption, and stopping suddenly can lead to tremors, anxiety, sweating, or even seizures. Alcohol Addiction, also known as Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), includes both the physical dependence and psychological compulsion to drink. That means that even when alcohol causes problems in different aspects of life, the urge to drink remains powerful. Addiction is characterized by a loss of control, cravings, and continued use despite negative consequences.
